Hunter Education Classes

HUNTER EDUCATION CLASSES  Pre-registration is required

March 1,3,5,8,10,17,18  6-9 pm, with the field day on March 13  9-1 pm

The mission of the ODFW Hunter Education Program is to continue the heritage of hunting by developing safe and responsible hunters. Hunter Education is mandatory for Oregon hunters under the age of 18 unless they are hunting on land owned by their parents or legal guardian or are participating in the Mentored Youth Hunter Program.

The Program

The Oregon Hunter Education course requires a $10 application fee and generally last s 20 hours.  All students are required to participate in a live fire exercise on field day.  At the end of the course, students are evaluated in three areas:

  1. A written test consisting of 60 multiple choice and true/false questions (passing grade 80 percent)
  2. A practical test of safe firearms handling
  3. An evaluation of the students attitude and sense of responsibility as demonstrated throughout the class

There is no minimum age to attend a course, but children under age 11 often have a difficult time with the material. Younger students may also lack the upper body strength necessary to handle a firearm safely and control the muzzle when performing loading and unloading drills.

Many parents choose to go through the course with their child, which is encouraged. Parents who participate and who pass the test will receive their certificate as well. Even parents who choose not to take the tests usually find the course both informative and enjoyable.  Adult hunters visiting other states are required to hold a Hunter Education Certificate.  Those hunters are welcome in this class as well.

Hunter education is not just for kids and not just for hunters. The program is for all folks who enjoy the outdoors and have an interest in conservation. The course can also be an excellent refresher for veteran hunters.

Pre-registration is required for classes at CGESC and will be closed when class registration reaches class maximum size.  Our next class is schedule for March 1,3,5,8,10,17,18  6-9 pm, with the field day on March 13  9-1 pm.  Classes are held in the main gun club lodge.  Students will be required to attend all classes.  Since classes fill quickly, those interested in the March class will need to call to pre-register.  The next class is presently scheduled in May.  Sign ups will be taken for the May class if the March class is full.
