SPORTING CLAYS AT CGESC

The CGESC has the newest Sporting Clays course in western Oregon. The course begins on a hillside covered in black berries, and then meanders down into an open field with black berries as a backstop.  This unique combination of terrain offers interesting shoot station placement, as well as unlimited target presentations. You will find each station fun and challenging, with everything from Rabbits, Battue’s, Midis, Incomers, Overhead targets, and combinations of all throughout the course.

We currently have 10 stations, with 2 additional stations to be added soon. In the winter we change the course often. During the Sporting Clays season the course is changed monthly for our tournaments. This keep’s the course interesting and our shooters challenged.

Our targets are thrown by Promatic Sporting Clay machines of various models that compliment the varied terrain and target zones. Dr. Steve Wilhite is our Sporting Clays Chairman. Dr.Wilhite is a world class FITASC shooter, traveling extensively around the country and the globe applying his skills in both FITASC and Sporting Clays event’s.  Dr. Wilhite has also attended the National shooting Complex target setting school held in San Antonio, Texas. He and another of our directors, Dr. Dave Able are also certified Level 1 instructors.

We use the Long Range LLC target key system to control our Promatic traps. The system is state of the art. With either count up or count down keys available, it affords our shooters complete control of whatever they would like to do on the course.  The computerized system and report capabilities are top shelf. As an example, with the shooter owning his / her personal key, we can generate a report that will tell you. When you shot, what time you shot, how many shots taken at any given station, as well as total birds shot to date. The system will also allow the shooter to shoot alone, by programming delays into the bug.

Come visit us and shoot a round in the “Fun Zone,” we bet you can’t shoot just one!

Sporting Clays always fun ...

Sporting Clays always fun ...

Sporting Clays is a challenging clay target game designed to simulate field shooting. On a Sporting Clays course, shooters are presented with a wide variety of targets that duplicate the flight path of gamebirds, such as flushing, crossing, incoming and other angling shots.

Courses are laid out in natural surroundings and typically include five or 10 shooting "stations" with shooters moving from one station to the next to complete the course. Each "station" presents shooters with a different type of shot. At a "grouse station," for example, shooters might face flushing "birds" that zip in and out of the trees. At a "decoying duck" station, incoming targets may float in toward the shooter.

Most courses make use of natural features such as woods and ponds to create a realistic setting for each type of shot. At any "station," targets may be thrown as singles, simultaneous pairs, following pairs (one target right after the other), or report pairs (the second target launched at the sound of the gun being fired at the first).

To further challenge shooters, target size may vary from the standard trap/skeet clay bird to the smaller "midi" and "mini" targets, or a flat disc shaped "battue" target. There are even special "rabbit" targets that are thrown on end and skitter across the ground.
